A Soy-free New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!  At this time we are all making our New Year's resolutions to eat better and exercise more.  Once again I am going to try to include more high quality protein in my life.  Since I don't have an appetite for meat, I use whey protein on an occasional basis.  Why not the obvious (soy) choice?

Because, as I have blogged before, I am aware of the real story behind soy.  Soy was once used as a rotation crop (not for human consumption but to leech chemicals out of the soil to prepare it for a crop like barley, wheat, or rice).  Soy absorbs heavy metals (and agents used in pesticides).  The pesticide residue in soy is higher than in any other crop!

Dow Chemical, DuPont, Ralston Purina, and Archer Daniels Midland are the main forces behind the rise of soy as a protein source in the US diet.  If you look at the ingredient and understand the process behind such products as "Silk" soy milk, you will understand that you are consuming one of the most overprocessed foods in the universe of processed food.

The place that soy has traditionally held in Asian diets belongs to fermented soy (soy sauce, miso, tempeh and the like).  There are benefits to consumption of fermented soy, as a small part of the diet.  But we Americans are consuming vast quantities of foods, and displacing those with an equally vast quantity of soy is not going to work in the long term.

Please go to a website like Dr. Mercola's for exhaustive reports on the health concerns behind soy.   Beware of ads (even ads paired with my blog over which I have no control) which tout "the real story behind soy."  Get to the truth, yourself.

And have a happy, soy-free New Year!
